Berthold “Bert” Piel

On November 25, 2008 Mr. Bert Piel of Ponoka passed away at the age of 81 years. Bert was born on September 3, 1927 overseas and came to Canada with his parents, settling in the Usona District west of Wetaskiwin where he grew up on a farm. At a young age he developed Polio, but that didn’t slow him down. He attended Ernest Park School and later Wetaskiwin. In 1949 he came to the Alberta Hospital Ponoka and took the Psychiatric Nursing Program where he was employed for 38 years. He met Esther Podridske and married her in 1951. A son David was born in 1959 and a daughter Cheryl in 1966. Bert was an avid outdoors man who enjoyed hunting and fishing and served as President of the Ponoka Fish and Game in 1964 as well as being one of the founding members of the Rifleman’s Rodeo. His other true passion was that of gardening and working in the yard, which was always immaculate. If anyone ever needed a helping hand with anything ... he was always there without hesitation. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Esther; son David (Lorna); daughter Cheryl (Kelly); grandchildren Shannon and Sheena Piel; sisters Elsie Eklund and Erna (Bill) Jackson; brother Oscar; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1st at the Ponoka Funeral Home with the Interment Service following at Forest Home Cemetery. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Parkinson’s Society of Alberta.
