Connie Nelson

Connie left us suddenly on Wednesday, November 3, 2010. Those who mourn her loss are her husband Norman Nelson of Ponoka; brothers-in-law Gerry (Elsie) Nelson, Larry (Muriel) Nelson, and Wilfred Hennig; chosen son Wade Stephan and his boys Briley, Liam and Ethan; as well as many nieces and nephews. Connie is predeceased by her parents Peter and Mary Szecsy and all of her six siblings: Alec, Peter, Betty, Violet, Marion and Alice. Connie Szecsy was born in Kipling, Saskatchewan and she remained in that area until her teen years. She was a strong farm girl who worked hard beside her father doing all kinds of hard chores, even shoeing horses. She left the farm at seventeen following her sister Betty to Saskatoon where they earned their teaching certificates. Connie taught in many small towns in Alberta, however, Ponoka was the last and the best. Connie married Norman Nelson there, and she taught in Ponoka for 26 years, mostly grade one. Connie and Norm celebrated their 50 years of marriage last July. Their long life together was full of activity. They established a successful hardware store on Main Street in 1971. Their yearly winter holidays in Arizona began in 1991. These were some of Connie’s happiest days. She loved to travel. In fact, Connie loved many things: the Ponoka Rodeo - she never missed a year - cooking, entertaining, camping, dancing, singing, all social times, people in general, laughter and smiles, but perhaps most of all, children. In 2005 Connie and Norm moved from their much larger house to a small cozy home close to the Stampede Grounds, perfect for them, and much loved by Connie. A Funeral Service to celebrate Connie’s life was held at the Ponoka First Baptist Church on Monday, November 8, 2010. Cremation followed. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Children’s Wish Foundation, 271, 339 -50 Ave. SE, Calgary, AB T3B 2R6, Ronald McDonald House 101, 5010 - 43 St., Red Deer, AB T4N 6B2 the Stollery Children’s Hospital 1502 College Plaza, 8215 - 112 St., Edmonton, AB T6G 2C8 or any charity of the donor’s choice.
