May 2, 1934 - December 21, 2021
It is with great sadness the family announces the sudden passing of Eugene Sigmund Stebner in Ponoka on December 21, 2021. Eugene was born on May 2, 1934, in Patience, Alberta. He passed away in Ponoka at the age of 87 years. Eugene grew up farming north of Ponoka and moved several times as a child. He married Joyce (Ensminger) on July 6, 1956, and they started their family. They moved to the family farm north of Ponoka in 1960.
He spent much of his life working construction, farming, hauling milk, and then secured a position at the Alberta Hospital now known as Centennial Center looking after the grounds, green houses, clearing snow, and equipment maintenance. He worked there until he retired in 1997. Eugene retired to Red Deer and was an active volunteer for the Moose Lodge and Red Cross.
He married Gloria-Jean Geick, on May 27, 1989. After both retiring other positions, both Eugene and Jean worked at the Moose Hall. Jean doing the books and Eugene the janitorial, as well as catering, organizing, volunteering and anything that needed doing. They worked at the Moose for 17 years, retiring full time in 2014.
Eugene is fondly remembered for his love of gardening and love of playing cards. All his children, grandchildren, and hunting friends will always remember playing many Crib and Schmier games. He was the first to correct your counting if you missed a point. One of Eugene's favourite things to do was go hunting with friends and family which he did every fall for 50 years. He also loved camping, fishing, watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play hockey, baseball, soccer, and dance recitals.
Eugene is survived by his children Keith (Debra), Roger (Darlene), Darryl (Deb), Ken (Leanne), Shelley, and step-son Bill Geick; his grandchildren Megan (Ivan), Scott (Briley), Catherine (Jeff), Travis (Michele), Curtis (Chantel), Lynn (Latham), Bradley (Marly), Logan (Kashtin), Matthew (Morgan), Carter, Josh (Lindsey), and Erin; and his great-grandchildren Audrey, Luke, Vivienne, Scarlet, Shaylynn, Evan, Kennedy, Ruby, Birdie, Chase, Kara, Maverick, Blakely, McKinley, and Briar.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Eugene's name are gratefully accepted to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, Multiple Sclerosis Society, or any charity of your choice.
Due to the current restrictions on public gatherings, a small private Celebration of Life was held on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ponoka Funeral Home. The service was recorded and is available on Eugene's obituary page (www.womboldfuneralhomes.com).
