June 19, 1945 - November 21, 2019
Born on the 19th of June, 1945, George was the third child of Victor and Livina Verheire, immigrants from Belgium who settled in the Ferrybank District north west of Ponoka in 1928. After growing up on the farm, and a short stint driving truck, he started his own farm in the Fertile Forest district west of Ponoka. In 1966, he met and married Linda Millar from Crestomere and had three sons together, Darryl, Duane and Tracy. A motorcycle accident in 1972 left him a paraplegic but he continued to farm despite the challenges. In 1987, he married Brenda Weber from Rimbey and they continued to farm and travel the world together. Community service was an important part of George's life. He served several terms as Ponoka County Councillor, was an original member of the David Thompson Regional Health Authority and the Rimoka Foundation. He also served on the Ponoka General Hospital Board, the School Board, Chair of the Ponoka Rural Crime Watch Association, Chair of Homeglen Hall Board and Chair of a board which studied Ambulance Services for the Province of Alberta. George had a passion for boating, snowmobiling and became known for his collection of Farmalls and '56 Fords. After a long battle with his health, he passed away on November 21, 2019 in the Rimbey Care Center at 74 years young.
He was predeceased by his parents Victor and Livina, and his sister Loraine Brayer. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 32 years, Brenda; children Darryl (Laurie), Duane (Sandra), Tracy (Christina), Susan Couper (Lyle) and Bruce Weber (Jayne); grandchildren Kaytlyn, Natalie, Allecia, Ethan, Kelsey and Sheldon; sister Marjorie Verheire and brother-in-law Herb Brayer. Special thanks to the Rimbey Care Center staff for going above and beyond.
Memorial donations to the Canadian Paraplegic Foundation and the Alzheimer Society of Alberta are gratefully accepted.
