Hazel Hemeyer passed away at the Northcott Care Centre, Ponoka, on Thanksgiving Sunday, October 12, 2008 at the age of 87 years. Hazel was born to Clifford and Mary Stickney at their farm northwest of Ponoka on November 24, 1920 with Grandma Lizzie Stickney acting as midwife. Hazel stayed with her grandparents in Ponoka to take grade one and then took grades 2 to 9 at the Sharphead and Ferrybank one room schools before taking grade 10 in Ponoka. At a dance at Ferrybank Hall, she met Wilfred Hemeyer and they were married June 24, 1941. When Wilfred joined the army a year later and was sent to Ontario, Hazel went along and worked in a munitions factory. Shortly after the war, their three children were born. After that, her life was filled with farm activities typical of the times such as gardening, canning large quantities of fruit, vegetables, meat, pickles and jams and doing farm chores. They attended card parties and lots of dances including the Ponoka Battle River Wheelers Square Dance Club. Eventually, three grandchildren changed the focus of her life as well as did selling Avon. In 1980, Hazel and Wilfred retired to Ponoka. A new dimension was added as her eight great-grandchildren arrived. Finally Hazel moved to Rimoka and then to Northcott. Hazel is remembered by Wilfred Hemeyer of Ponoka; son Vernon (Carol) Hemeyer of Ponoka, and granddaughter Krista (Dave) Simanton and great-grandchildren Tyson, Shelby, Jake and Luke Simanton; grandson Ethan (Heidi) Hemeyer and great-grandchildren Michaela, Brooklyn, Jesse and Mackenzie Hemeyer; son Allan Hemeyer of Edmonton, son Howard (April Wilson) Hemeyer of Red Deer and granddaughter Chiyla Hemeyer; sister Arline Reglin and brothers Donald (Anne) Stickney and Kenneth (Sarah) Stickney; plus numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A Funeral Service was held at the Ponoka Funeral Home on Friday, October 17, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Interment followed in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Norhtcott Care Centre, Rimoka Housing Foundation, Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre or donor’s charity of choice.
