Hazel Bakewell (nee Knuff) was born in Unity, Saskatchewan on June 22, 1931 and grew up in Sylvania, Saskatchewan. She met her husband, George, in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and they were married in 1951, more than 67 years ago. They moved to Alberta to work and raise a family shortly after. George and Hazel both worked at Alberta Hospital, Ponoka throughout their careers - Hazel was one of the first group of women to complete the formal three year Psychiatric Nurse training as a mature student, graduating in 1970. Hazel believed in life-long learning, and challenged herself with ongoing nursing courses at Red Deer College in the early '70's. She concluded her working years at the hospital as the Coordinator of Volunteer Services. Hazel also had a passion for art and was an accomplished landscape artist. She continued to be involved in the Ponoka Art Club and zone competitions/art shows throughout her retirement years. Hazel will be lovingly remembered by her husband George and their children Kathryn (Lauran) Snyder, Roberta (Don) Clifford, Derrik (Lynn) Bakewell, Loretta "Ski" (Larry) Thompson, and Daryl (Cherry) Bakewell. She was a stellar grandmother to Carena (Craig) Pueschel, Breanne (Shawn) Coffill, Dawn (Rob) Naumann, Kelsey (Erica) Bakewell, Jared Snyder, Curtis (Amberly) Thompson, Stacey (Robbie) Nelson, Jenny (George) Cardinal, Jason (Breanna) Thompson, Shane (Jessica) Mallard, Carlyn Clifford, Dani Clifford, Clayton Campbell, and Melinda Campbell. Hazel was predeceased by her son Gerald in 1969, as well as four brothers and four sisters. She is survived by her sister Kathleen Moen who resides in Bjorkdale, Saskatchewan. A Funeral Service will be held for Hazel at the Ponoka Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2019.
