On September 9, 2020 Helga Newman passed on to her heavenly reward, just one month shy of her 95th birthday. Helga was born October 9, 1925 in the Blackmud District near Leduc, Alberta, the second of nine children born to Emil and Christine Tischer. She met Walter Newman while working at the Aberhart Memorial Sanatorium in Edmonton. They married on December 21, 1956, and moved to Ponoka in 1960. Helga worked at Alberta Hospital for 20 years and was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving in many capacities. Helga also loved traveling, camping, fishing, gardening and entertaining.
She lived a long, full life and will be fondly remembered by sister Inga Gingras of Leduc and brother Ed (Norma) Tischer of Calgary; sisters-in-law Helen Newman of Red Deer and Linda Tischer of Calgary; nieces and nephews and a host of friends and relatives. Helga was predeceased by her parents Emil and Christine Tischer; her husband Walter Newman; sisters Ruby Tischer, Eleanor Sullivan, and Hannah Grunwald; and brothers Helmut, Henry, and Al Tischer.

A Funeral Service for Helga will be held at the Ponoka Funeral home on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at 2:00 pm.
