In loving memory of who passed away at the Ponoka Hospital - Long Term Care on Thursday, February 3 after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease at the age of 85 years.
Ron is lovingly remembered by his wife Jean (formerly MacKenzie) of Ponoka; his son Alex, daughter Tina, grandson Sam, brother Gifford, and great-granddaughter Emily - all of Christchurch, New Zealand; his son Christopher of Australia; and his step-children Gale Dewald of Ponoka; Graham MacKenzie of Swift Current, Saskatchewan; Karen MacKenzie of Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia; and three step-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.
Ron was born in Kilsyth, Scotland and as a teenager he attended Kilsyth Academy Stirlingshire where he met Jean. They were in the same grade and a close friendship developed. When Ron was 16 his parents moved away to New Zealand and Ron reluctantly had to go with them.
At 19 years of age he joined the New Zealand Police, a career that spanned approximately 37 years, finally culminating in the rank of Commander of the Christchurch and District Division. He earned a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Canterbury in 1984.
Ron was a keen sportsman competing in many athletic events on behalf of the New Zealand Police. He was also a talented Piper and was instrumental in forming the Wellington Police Pipe Band.
After a long separation of 65 years and through a unique set of circumstances, Ron was happily reunited with Jean in 2016. They were married on February 9, 2019 at the Ponoka Drop-In Centre.
