Herbert Dewhirst

On August 9, 2008 Mr. Herbert Dewhirst of Ponoka passed away at the age of 86 years. Herb was born in Ponoka and grew up on a farm in the Eastside District and continued to farm for a few years until a move into town where he began driving a fuel truck. He then worked for the County of Ponoka as a school bus driver and custodian at the Grade 1 School until his retirement. Herb was a founding member of the Battle River Wheelers square dance group and square danced for over 45 years; was a member of the United Church Choir for many years; and was a member of the Ponoka Sunshine Singers. He will be remembered lovingly and especially for his beautiful tenor voice and his singing at weddings, funerals and community events. Herb also loved camping and hiking in the mountains. Herb is survived by his loving wife Arlene; son Kevin (Bonnie) of Grande Prairie; grandchildren Alexis and Christopher; sisters Alice Reese and Helen Spelrem of Ponoka, Verna Miller (Larry) of Lethbridge and Evelyn Abbott of Edmonton; as well as many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Wallace and Myrtle Dewhirst and his brother Harold. At Herb’s request, no formal funeral service will be held. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 101, 5208 - 53rd Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 5K2 or the Ponoka Wheelchair Van Society.
