Horace Arthur “Red” Howard

Horace Arthur “Red” Howard was born on August 23, 1918 in Edmonton and passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 13, 2011 at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre. Red will be greatly missed by his children Art (Yvonne) of Calgary, Richard (Donna) of Leduc, Les (Kate) Melin of Usona, Becca (Clint) Goodrich of Wetaskiwin and Deb (Barry) Stevens of Ponoka; grandchildren Scott, Tim, Dean, Pamela, Kim, Darcy, Leah, Bobbi-Jo, Tara, Jed, Chelsy, Sarah, Drianna, Caitlin and Taylor; great-grandchildren Jordan, Christopher, Kevin, Avery, Tanner, Jayden, Bella, Hunter, Katie, Sophia, Austin and McKayla; as well as nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by his father Horace Hubbard Howard, step-mother Martha Howard, his wife Patricia, infant son Barry, daughter Betty and grandson Darren. Many will remember Red from when he served as the Chief of Police for the County of Wetaskiwin and Special Constable for the SPCA. Red’s love and compassion for animals was evident during his time with the SPCA, particularly when travelling to various rodeo events to ensure that the animals were not mistreated. Red loved to watch the chuckwagon races, so much so that had he had the opportunity to race, he probably would have. Although chuckwagon drivers get a bad rap from the public, Red’s interaction with them and witness to the bond between driver and horses was tremendous and he admired them for it. Red loved his jobs and put his heart into them. He may not have been the most well liked while in the line of duty, but he took his job very seriously and it showed. Red’s motto was, “if you’re going to do a job, do it well”. A Funeral Service to celebrate Red’s life will be held at the Ponoka Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2011. Memorial donations may be made to the Rimoka Golden Leisure Lodge Endowment Fund or any charity of your choice. To express condolences to Red’s family, please visit www.womboldfuneralhomes.com.
