In loving memory ~

It is with great sadness, and recognition of a life well lived that the family of Hugh Michael Greene share with you that our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on the morning of Sunday, August 18, 2024.

Hugh, you embraced spending one hundred and one years on this earth and experiencing the vast historical and cultural changes this presented. You experienced joy and faced sadness. These years granted you and all who knew you the opportunity to engage with you, and share life with you, a blessing for you and them.

Trips to the local grocery store for a carton of milk, to the post office and later just to the street mailbox were never simple tasks. You always found someone to stop and talk with. Your involvement in church, community groups and the Royal Canadian Legion enriched your life and the lives of those around you. Gardening and daily walks on the river path filled you with joy and purpose and you generously provided a smile and a chat to those you encountered along your way, or passed by your garden of flowers and vegetables.

Wednesday mornings coffee with friends and comrades, drop in visits from family and friends, and your life's daily events have all been recorded in your calendars for decades. You engaged and embraced life.

You lived a life full of love of family and community and this enriched you and all those around you. You are "Our Old Man".

Hugh was born on July 24, 1923 in Mullaghdun, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, to Patrick and Rose Greene. He was the first born of their nine children. He was predeceased by his siblings: Eugene, Patrick, Kevin, Mae, Jim, Roseanne, Eileen and Jerry.

In 1928 the Greene family immigrated to Canada. Travelled by train from Halifax and arrived in Alberta to join up with Hugh's Uncle Owen. Hugh grew up helping on the farm. He graduated from Wetaskiwin High School and shortly after joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served overseas. Upon discharge he returned home and purchased the family farm. Shortly after this he met Doris and they were married on August 10, 1949. They commemorated their seventy-fifth wedding anniversary August 10, 2024. In December 1958 Hugh, Doris and their three daughters moved to Ponoka. For the next sixty-five plus years Ponoka was Hugh's home.

Hugh and Doris brought five more Greene's into this world. Hugh is survived by his wife Doris. Hugh was predeceased by their daughter Sharon.
