Lena Tofsrud

Lena Emma Tofsrud (nee Hebner) was born in Wetaskiwin on September 25 1927. She married Stan Tofsrud in 1950 and they lived in Ponoka for a short time. They then moved to Lacombe, followed by Crossfield and finally back to Ponoka in 1964 where they settled permanently. Stan and Lena enjoyed 34 years of marriage and raised two daughters Janet and Evelyn. Lena worked at the Alberta Hospital on the house keeping staff for many years. She also volunteered with the Ponoka General Hospital Auxiliary and the White Canners. Lena loved gardening and the outdoors; her and her husband would often enjoy camping or simply watching the hummingbirds together in their backyard. She knit and crocheted as a pastime throughout her life, often giving gifts of blankets and throws to her family. Lena struggled for 26 years with deteriorating eye sight all the while maintaining a positive attitude and enjoying her family and friends. She passed away on November 23, 2010 at the Ponoka General Hospital after a 3 week battle with pneumonia. Lena was predeceased by her husband Stan in 1984. She is survived by her daughters Janet (Bruce) Rose, Evelyn (Joe) Peterson, grandchildren Kimberly Peterson, Serena Rose (Ryan), Nicole Latimer (Michael), Jason Peterson and Rachel Rose (Sean), and 3 great grandsons, Jack, Nicolas and Frederick. She is also survived by her sisters Anne Warnke and Gloria (Jim) Ganske of Wetaskiwin, brother Leonard (Nora) Hebner of Leduc, sister in law Jean Tofsrud of Telkwa, BC and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on November 27, 2010 at the Ponoka Funeral Home with Reverend Alvin Oberhammer officiating. Interment followed at Forest Home Cemetery in Ponoka. The family would like to thank Rimoka Lodge for their love and care over the past 8 years, Doctor’s Chen and Greyling as well as the staff at the Ponoka General Hospitalfor their care and support. Thanks also to the Ponoka Funeral Home and Bob Ronnie Catering for their professional and caring service. Donations in Lena’s memory are gratefully accepted to the C.N.I.B. or the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation.
