Lorraine Ivy Matthews passed away peacefully at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre on January 10, 2024, at the age of 82 years young. She was born on February 12, 1941, in Bentley, Alberta to Ivy and Fred Johnson. She lived most of her life in Central Alberta - Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, and Bashaw.
Lorraine enjoyed going to country dances in her younger years. She enjoyed reading, ceramics, word games, solitaire, and some camping.
Lorraine was a wife and a mother to her children. She had several careers, some of which were: waitress, bank teller, and meat wrapper. She also worked at a car dealership where she would take care of ordering in vehicles. Jim and Lorraine bought a retail clothing store and they worked together there for 34 years. She took pleasure in visiting with customers; there was always a dish of candies for those who had a sweet tooth. There was a box of Smarties for the children too. She became known as the "Candy Lady" to the customer's children.
Lorraine is survived by her husband Jim of 40 years together; daughters Tammy and Gina; son Don; brother Fred (Sonny) Johnson; sister-in-law Irene; and one sister Sharon Blondon; as well as numerous grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
She was predeceased by her parents Ivy and Fred; step-father Ed; sisters Audry, Marilyn, Sara, Lillian, Gloria, and infant sister Ivy; brothers-in-law Jim, Ken, and Clifford; and her niece Sandra.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff in the Palliative Care unit at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, for the love and care they showed Mom.
A Celebration of Life was held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the Bashaw Community Centre.
