Margie Mae Phelan (nee Mattern)

April 30th 1927 to August 12th 2010

The family of Margie Phelan is deeply saddened to announce her passing on Thursday August 12th at the age of 83. Friends and family will dearly miss Margie. Our mother was well known for her cheerful personality and great sense of humor. Her husband Jim predeceased her in 1996. Margie is survived by her daughters Gail, (Bob), and Ina, (David), her sons Patrick, (Vivian), Gordon (Theresa), and Douglas, (Teresa), her Grandchildren, April, Lucas, Kathleen, Jim, Daniel, Chris, Grace, William, Megan, and Thomas. Mom grew up in the dirty 30's on a farm near Ponoka. Our mother loved to sing with her two sisters Mildred and Marilee, and actually sang together as a group called the Mattern Trio. Unfortunately her beautiful voice wasn't passed on to her children. She loved nothing better than to sing along to old musicals and recordings from the 40's. After the War ended she worked as a Telephone operator in Whitehorse. There she met Jim Phelan who was working for Canadian National Telecommunications. They were married in June 15,1949 in Three Hills Alberta and then settled in their first home in Edmonton Alberta. Mom wasn't a stranger to change as our father was transferred to 5 different cities before the last of us kids left home. In 2001 she built a home with her son Doug (Teresa) in Blackie Alberta where she resided until her death. Our family would like to thank the staff at the Peter Lougheed, and High River Hospitals for their compassionate care. If so desired, a memorial donation may be made in Margie's name directly to the High River General Hospital (560- 9 Avenue West, High River, Alberta T1V 1B3) A Memorial Service will take place on Monday August 16th at 10:00 am in The Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home. Following the service Margie will be laid to rest at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. To email expressions of sympathy: mountainview@arbormemorial.com Subject heading:Margie Phelan.
