Marie McDowell

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Sister, Aunt and Friend. Elizabeth ‘Marie’ Eleanor McDowell (Monaghan) passed away on June 18, 2010 at the age of 87 years at Northcott Care Centre in Ponoka, Alberta. Marie was born in Dalton,Nebraska on April 22, 1923. Married to Joseph Doran on November 25, 1942; Widowed on December 15, 1944. Married to Robert ‘Bob’ McDowell on June 8, 1946; Widowed on July 13, 1994. Marie and Bob were full time dairy farmers. Marie was fully involved in all aspects of farm life and raising a family. She maintained a huge family garden and always knew where to find the best saskatoons. She was a 4-H leader, a lifetime member of WI and many other community groups were a huge part of her life. After moving to their acreage she enjoyed spending time with family, friends and sharing her love and knowledge of baking, gardening and sewing with her grandchildren. When Marie decided she could no longer be alone on the acreage she moved to Reid Manor and then on to Northcott Care Centre. The family extends their gratitude to the staff of FCSS, Reid Manor, and Northcott for their kindness and loving care. Marie will be lovingly remembered by Children: Francis (Mary), Wesley (Joyce), Bruce (Wendy), Anne; Grandchildren: Carrie (Kelvin) Vivier, Rhonda (Troy) Stawart, Jody (Kevin) Carey, Elizabeth, Kathryn (Ken) Wilson, Allison (Curtis), Brant, Ross (Mandy); Great Grandchildren: Coltyn (Lindsey) & Daryan Vivier, Brynn & Lowan Stawart, Mason, Matthew & Landin Carey, Morgan & Marlin Wilson, Nikolai, Avery & Penelope McDowell; Siblings: Alice Unger, John (Gladys) Monaghan, James (Mary) Monaghan; Sisters in Law: Irene Monaghan, Jane Lafreniere, Muriel McDowell. Marie was predeceased by her Mother Mildred Monaghan, her Father Leo Monaghan and her Brothers Clayton and Patrick Monaghan. A celebration of Marie’s life was held on Friday June 25, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Ponoka United Church with interment following at Dakota Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to Ponoka Wheelchair Van, Northcott Care Centre, Dakota Cemetery, or Dakota Community Historical Society.
