Patricia (McNally) Dixon

Patricia McNally, the youngest of five sisters was born on March 8, 1923 to Catherine and Michael McNally, in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. Unfortunately she never got to know her father due to his untimely death, three months before Pat was born. Some time later, Mrs. McNally and her five daughters moved to England. In 1942, Pat enlisted in the Women’s Royal Army Corp and served until 1945. During that time she met and married an English soldier, Nelson Dixon (Nick). A year later, a daughter, Maria, was born. In 1951, the Dixon family decided to come to Canada and they stayed with Pat’s sister, Kay Fleming, in Bashaw for a short time but then chose to move to Ponoka where Nick became a Psychiatric Nurse. In 1972, Maria married Larry Lentz and they later had three children, Shelagh, Craig and Patrick who received Gaelic names in honor of Pat’s Irish roots. The grandchildren were a very special part of Nick and Pat’s life, especially in their retirement years. In 1991, Nick passed away, leaving a void in Pat’s life that was very hard to fill. The emptiness was made somewhat easier by keeping busy with her daughter and her grandchildren. Pat was blessed to live to see not only her grandchildren grow up to become fine young people, but she also got to enjoy six great-grandchildren. On Tuesday, March 23, 2010 Pat left us with all her family present at her bedside. She will be missed terribly but we take comfort in the fact that she is at peace. Pat leaves to mourn her daughter, Maria (Larry), her grandchildren Shelagh (Jeff), Craig (Jen Reinholt) and Patrick (Michelle) along with six great-grandchildren; her sister Kay, and her two children Carol (Rod) Ronnie and their son Sheldon (Jennie); as well as Mike (Terry) Fleming along with many nephews and nieces in England. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Krzysztof Sobanski presiding. Donations in honor of Pat Dixon can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta.
