Richard 'Dick' Roy Osokin of the Homeglen District, Alberta passed away suddenly on Monday, May 11, 2020 at the age of 74 years.
Dick was born and raised wreaking havoc in Homeglen with his siblings his entire childhood! He attended the Homeglen School for Grades 1 to 6, Sylvan Heights for Grades 6 to 10, and the Ponoka High School for Grades 11 and 12. It was during his high school years that Dick developed into a high-profile football player, sought after during his time playing with the Edmonton Huskies. Sport did not trump his ability to master other skills; including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and just about anything else! A jack-of-all-trades and a master of all, Dick used his skills to assist anyone who needed his help. He met the love of his life, Frances McCall while working at the Ponoka Hospital. Despite thinking he was a patient, Dick won her over and they were inseparable from that point on. They settled on Dick's childhood farm and built a new life for their family, becoming a well-known and loved couple within the community. Dick was employed full-time with his job at the Rimbey Gas Plant as a respected maintenance foreman, as well as maintaining his full-time job farming. He had a very strong work ethic, teaching his daughters early on that, "there's no such thing as 'can't' - just 'won't'!" As an avid motorcyclist, Dick eventually encouraged Fran to join him on the bike to embark on new adventures for the couple. That, and his passion for golf, filled his life with joy. Dick was well-respected, known for his love of a good time, and for always lending a helping hand.
Dick will always be remembered and greatly missed by his loving daughters, Michelle Osokin (Andre Doornbos) of Castlegar, B.C. and their daughter, Edie; and Leanne Osokin (David DeRosa) also of Castlegar, B.C. and their children, Marlo and Marcus. He will also be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his two sisters, Maggie Leladharsingh of Edmonton; and Joanne (Brent) Thirsk of Ponoka; in addition to many nieces and nephews, other family members, and a host of close friends and neighbours. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Joan; his beloved wife, Fran in 2016; and his older brother, Bob.
A Gathering of Family and Friends to Celebrate Dick's Life will be held at a later date. In Dick's memory, the Family has asked that we all extend a helping hand to our friends and neighbours ... as Dick would have always done.
