March 9, 1936 - November 12, 2024
In loving memory ~
Robert James Evans was born March 9, 1936 and passed away peacefully November 12, 2024. He was the chosen child of Dave and Sarah Evans of the Wood River District.
Starting school was difficult as the only language he knew was Welsh as taught to him by his parents. Many hours were spent walking around Nelson Lake to and from Magic School. Here, Bobby's friendship with Edgar Peterson, another only child, began and continued until his passing with many calls from Salt Springs Island, British Columbia. He had many good friends in his younger years as was evidenced by the number of times he was a best man.
Bob enjoyed his time on the Wood River Hall board and Wood River Festival committee. After farming did not work out for him, he worked construction with Don Pederson and farm work with Ted Harper or Ron Owens in northern Alberta. In 1968 back surgery necessitated Bob being on a striker frame for nine months, which was a depressing time in his life. In 1970, Bob began working as custodial staff at Ponoka Composite high school making many friends of students and teachers alike. Mecca Glenn school was his final job until retirement in 2000. Bob enjoyed many trips to British Columbia and northern Alberta. Friends and acquaintances old and new enjoyed numerous cups of coffee and long visits. Each knew him as Bobby or Bob, but in his later years he chose Robert as that was the name given to him by his biological mother. A multi year search for his birth mother only ended in disappointment. In November 2021, Robert made the decision to move to Rimoka Lodge and surrendered his driver's license. The staff at Rimoka treated him with kindness and respect, as did Dr. Greyling, Home Care, FCSS and staff at Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre. He thoroughly enjoyed his 'family' at Rimoka and was a bachelor who had a special place in his heart for those who prepared his meals. Whenever someone said, "have a good day", he'd say, "it'll be as good as I make it". Robert was predeceased by his parents, Dave and Sarah.
As per Robert's wishes there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place and Robert's ashes will be laid to rest in the family plot at Forest Home Cemetery, Ponoka. As you have your morning coffees, please remember the good times spent with Bobby Evans. Donations in memory of Robert are gratefully accepted to The Lending Cupboard or Ponoka FCSS.
