Roy Leighton

It is with no regrets, but deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather on October 30, 2010. He is finally released from the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease to rejoin our mother [Margaret - March 11, 2010]. He is survived by his children Allen [Isabel] Leighton, Jean [Barry Gromnisky] Purschke, Don [Mary] Leighton, Lori [Dean] Edwards and his grandchildren, Michelle Edwards, James, Gavin, Daniel, and Owen Leighton. Roy is predeceased by his brother Jack and wife Maggie. Dad lived a long and interesting life. He attended Olds College, attaining an agricultural degree. He also took welding at SAIT. He put this training to very good use, as the neighbors can attest to. He WAS the local welding shop for years, very useful at harvest time! Dad was the ultimate Mr. Fix-it. He knew how to do everything from plumbing and carpentry to wiring and helped many a neighbor, and certainly all his children! Dad was active with many causes: Co-Op [director for 12 years], NDP party, Unifarm, Farmers Union [local president, secretary] and the Credit Union. Dad and Mom moved to Ponoka in 1999 - then he really got busy! Meals on Wheels, Information booth, 55 plus club, and especially the Legion [he held every office]. While Dad may be best remembered for his community service, the most fun part had to be the Dakota Ski Hill. Every Friday night and Sunday afternoon, the tow rope was running. Hundreds of people enjoyed their time on our slopes. Thank you to those who joined us for a celebration of the lives of our parents Roy and Margaret [Maggie] Leighton Saturday November 13, 2010. Tributes, fellowship and refreshments were shared from 1-5 p.m. at the Ponoka Legion. Special thanks to the wonderful staff in Aurora House AHP for treating Dad with dignity and respect. We are also grateful to Jamil and his staff with Ponoka Professional Pharmacy for outstanding service.
