Russell Petterson

Russell Petterson passed away peacefully on October 27 at 91 years of age with his wife of 60 years at his side. He was born on Sept. 29, 1920 and passed away at the Northcott Care Center in Ponoka. Russell grew up on a farm in Calmar, the eldest son of John and Julia Petterson. He attended Progress School and took his High School in Thorsby. He then attended the Edmonton Normal School class of 1940. Russell finished his Bachelor of Education at the U of A in 1954 and an Administration Diploma in 1956. Russell taught at Progress School as well as Calmar School, and was Principal in Warburg, Crestomere and Ponoka Composite High School. He retired after 36 years in the education system. Russell and Joyce travelled extensively throughout the world, wintering many years in Arizona. He was a member of the Ponoka Lions Club for 17 years, and a member of the Alberta Retired Teachers Association. Russell enjoyed playing his accordion at Jam Sessions at the Drop-in Center as well as playing at the Centennial Center. He was often seen riding his bicycle through town, even in winter. Russell resided in Ponoka for over 50 years. He will be lovingly remembered, and sadly missed by his wife Joyce; brother Walter (Audrey) of Camrose; daughter Terry (Jim Neis) of Okotoks; sons Gregory (Shirley) of Richmond, Texas, and Garth (Joanne) of Cold Lake; and grandchildren: Sabrina and Candace Oakes; Lanna Petterson; Kristofer, Denver, Dana, and Kjell Petterson; and step granddaughters: Heather, Tanis, and Melissa Neis; and many nieces, and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at the Ponoka Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2011. Cremation has taken place.
