Shirley Hinkley


July 6, 1934 - April 13, 2010


Shirley Anne Hinkley passed away on April 13, 2010 at the age of 75 years. Shirley was born in Bentley and was raised on their existing farmstead. She was third generation to raise her family on the Harris homestead. Shirley had a busy, happy childhood, attending school at Anthony Henday. She worked as a phone operator prior to supporting her family on the farm. Shirley and Gawney were married on July 7, 1956. A short time later they took over the Harris farm. Shirley was very loyal and dedicated to her family, grandchildren, community events, active in the Mending Club, Women’s Unifarm, Church events, Ladies Aide and supporting council events right up until her passing. She will be truly missed but always remembered for her amazing impact on the lives of the people she touched. She passed away on her beloved homestead. Shirley is lovingly remembered by her husband of 54 years, Gawney; her children Louanne (Rick) Crawford, Mark (Kristi) Hinkley and Blair Hinkley; her grandchildren Marie (Nick) Vandenhurk, Michele Crawford, Gina (Cody) Janke, Steven Crawford, Cheyanne Hinkley, Blake Hinkley, Sara Hinkley, Austin Hinkley, Ethan Hinkley and Erica Vries; and her great-grandchildren Khyanna, Libby and Jacob Vandenhurk; sisters Evelyn Rodney and Margery (Milton) Fenske; brothers Garry (Ethel) Harris and Ron (Sharon) Harris and their families as well as other relatives and friends. A Funeral Service was held on Monday, April 19, 2010 at the First Baptist Church Ponoka at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Paul Spate officiating with Interment following at the Forest Home Cemetery. Donations in Shirley’s memory are gratefully accepted to Ponoka F.C.S.S. (Cancer Fund) or to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (Alberta Chapter).
