Ted Kroening
Ted was born in Bruderheim, Alberta on November 7, 1920 and moved with his family to Bittern Lake, Edmonton and then settled in the Manitou District of Ponoka County in 1930. He was one of 19 children, two of which died in infancy. He married Frankie Stoddard on February 10, 1944. They had four children: Sharon, Diane, Jim and Kathy. In his early years he played the guitar, accordion and mouth organ. He spent most of his working years in road construction and cat skinning, the last 25 years were with the County of Ponoka. He retired in 1985 and had more time for all of his hobbies which included shooting gophers, fishing, hunting, making sausage, golfing and spending time at the pond. Until he was 87, he could be found on the golf course Monday to Friday mornings with Tom and Shirley and his brother Wiff. In the last couple of years, ill health forced Ted to move from his home in Riverside to Rimoka Lodge. In March of 2011 he moved to the Auxiliary Unit of the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre where he passed away on April 2, 2012. His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ponoka United Church with Interment at Forest Home Cemetery. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to S.T.A.R.S., the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Ted is survived by his children Sharon (Larry) Hoffman, Diane (Leonard) Gadd, Jim (Heather) Kroening and Kathy Kroening (Don); as well as eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Bob of Ponoka and sisters June Whitman of Ponoka, Venie Coote of Calgary, Vivian Sileck of Vancouver and Addie Vernon of Washington. He was predeceased by his wife Frankie and his grandson Chad Hoffman as well as eleven brothers and sisters: Hertha Kruger, Joe Kroening, Olga Walther, Rita Cronander, Emma Robinson, Ozzy Kroening, Lydia Smith, Ernie Kroening, Ben Kroening, Lillian Phillips and Wiff Kroening.
