Veikko ‘Vic’ Armas Salo

Veikko ‘Vic’ Armas Salo was born July 22, 1931 in the Usona District and passed away on September 15, 2011 at the age of 80 years. Vic was the second oldest of five children born to John and Saima Salo. He grew up on the family farm helping with the work at an early age as did his siblings, and received his education at the Glen Fallock School. He later worked on road construction hauling gravel and asphalt in various parts of Alberta. Vic was always willing to help the family whenever needed. In 1967 he purchased some homestead land south of Buck Lake where he made improvements and for many years, pastured cattle for several southern Alberta ranchers. Vic enjoyed ski-dooing, motor-cycling and reading, and travelled to Ontario and a few times into the States. In his earlier years he especially enjoyed having his niece and nephews visit and later as the nephews were able to help him on the farm. In 2004, due to health issues, Vic had to eventually move to homes providing better care and was a resident at Northcott Care Centre in Ponoka for the past 2½ years. Vic is fondly remembered by his brothers Carl and Vilho (Leona) Salo and sisters Ilona (Ron) Hagglund, Ilmi Hoyem and half-sister Irene Salo; niece Debbie Salo and nephews Darrel Salo, Frank and Jeff Bosscha, Dale and Byron (Leanne) Hagglund, and Trent (Ketty) and Kenton Hoyem; and other relatives and friends. Vic was predeceased by his parents John and Saima Salo; brother-in-law Ivar Hoyem and nephew Tony Bosscha. Vic’s ashes will be interred between his parents at the Twin Creek Cemetery, Wetaskiwin County. A Memorial Service will be held at the Lone Ridge Community Hall at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2011. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Northcott Care Centre in Ponoka.
