Velma was born in Winterton, Newfoundland on October 20, 1942, the oldest child of John and Nellie Millard. As a child she lived in many different places which included Winterton, Winnipeg, Germany, Oromocto New Brunswick, Toronto, Geary, New Brunswick, and finally Ponoka. On May 24, 1964, she delivered her only child Janet. In 1971 she married Larry Ayers, who was stationed at CFB Gagetown, and in 1975 the family of 3 moved to Ponoka, where Velma lived until her passing. Throughout Velma's life she always enjoyed having horses, along with some very special dogs in her life and also loved gardening. Velma was a very accomplished seamstress and also took up refinishing furniture. Velma was predeceased by her husband Larry in 2002, both parents John (1988) and Nellie (2018) Millard, both father & mother-in-law Glen and Merlie Ayers, and brother-in-law Roger Ayers. She is survived by loving daughter Janet Schacher and son-in-law Ellie, grandsons Colby and Jared, all of Monitor, Alberta; her brother Ken (Eileen) Millard, their children, god-son David (Kerri), Mike (Pauline), and Kenny and his daughter MacKenzie, all of Chestermere; her sister Linda (Bruce) Husler of Ponoka, and her children Rebecca and Derek her brother John Millard of Geary, New Brunswick and his children Lori and Sherry; her sister-in-law Lynn Algar of Ponoka and her children Janet (Jeff), Bonnie, and Bradley; as well as many great nieces and nephews. A Private Family Service will be held for Velma at a later date.
