In loving memory ~
It is with love that we remember William "Bill" McCann Walker, who passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2023, at the age of 99 years young.
As a youngster, Bill attended school at Lone Ridge before graduating from Wetaskiwin High School. After school, he spent a winter working on the Alaska Highway before joining the Canadian Military during WWII. After serving his county in England, Belgium, Holland, and finally, with the Canadian Army Occupation Force in Germany, Bill returned home to farm with his dad before attending the University of Alberta to become first a teacher (at Bonnie Glen, Pipestone, and Falun Schools), then later Vice Principal at Falun. In 1949 Bill married Edith Cooper and six years later they bought what became the home quarter for the family farm which has become a cornerstone in the Lone Ridge Community. While on the farm Bill and Edith were active boosters of the community. Bill was a member of the Lone Ridge Community Hall Board for 40 years, a director of the Co-op Refineries Board for 20 years, a director of the West Wetaskiwin Rural Electrification Association for 29 years, and a member of the Advisory Council for the United Farmers of Alberta for 9 years. Bill and Edith Walker were inducted into the Wetaskiwin Agricultural Society Hall of Fame in 1996.
Bill will be forever remembered by his children, Ross, Donna (Jon), Fern (Trev), and Maureen (Chip): 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Elinor Moyse; sister-in-law, Joyce Johnston; several nieces and nephews; and friends. Bill was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Edith; son, Lester; grandson, Mark; son-in-law, Brad; and brother, John.
We would like to thank the staff at Seasons Retirement Community in Ponoka for the wonderful care given to Dad, as well as the Ponoka Home Care Nurses and Dr. Chris Venter.
A Memorial Celebration will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Wetaskiwin Church of God (4407 56 Ave)
If so desired, donations in memory of Bill are gratefully appreciated to a charity of one's choice.
