Hammertime

So here we go zooming rather gingerly into another year, and with the much-hyped economic downturn and the Federal Government fiasco, there are bound to be lots of questions and speculations about our future.

I truly hope everyone in Ponoka had an enjoyable week no matter how it was spent. A few days off from work, delicious food and presents from but more importantly the presence of those I love, especially with the addition of my now 11 -month old niece, made this a Christmas I will cherish for years to come.

Eraina usually fills this space with her valued opinion, but on Dec. 19 she flew home for the holidays. We all wish her and her family a very merry Christmas but her being away means you’re stuck with me. Oh come on, it’s not that bad. Do you want to know what is? Yes, it’s the weather and this week that’s my beef.

Dear Santa; I’ve been a good mom all year! I’ve fed, cleaned, and cuddled my two children on demand, visited the doctor’s office more than the doctor, sold 62 cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground, and figured out how to attach nine patches onto my daughter’s Girl Scout sash with staples and a glue gun!

The young man received a rather alarming phone call from his father early one morning during the hectic month of December. “Your mother and I are really not looking forward to Christmas,” his father quietly explained. “We have been married for over 45 years, and things like family tradition don’t seem to be the same as they used to be?”

The first day of winter has not yet come but it is definitely obvious that it has already reared its ugly head. Ponoka has already witnessed snowfall, icy roads and record freezing temperatures, without the wind chill.

The talk of the year has been the global economic crisis with most of the attention focused on the United States. Many companies are seeking bailouts, or any kind of help to try and stay afloat during this time.

While all of us are trying very hard to get into the spirit of Christmas our federal government members have been sent home until next year to get their act together.
