Nothing has been immune to the effects of the low price for a barrel of oil, including the popular sport of barrel racing.
The seventh annual Barrel Bash event took place over the weekend at the Calnash Ag Event Centre, although it was toned down considerably from last year.
Organizer Lisa Nault Gallais explained the economic hit to many businesses and individuals that were involved previously had to scale back or not participate as a sponsor this year. That left the event to offer up day jackpot money and a sweater for the slot race, instead of the much larger payouts of last year.
The event was able to run races in the peewee, youth and open classes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the payouts based upon the number of entries for each event.
