Bentley Generals win league title

The Bentley Generals are once again Chinook Hockey League champions.

Bentley defeated the Chiefs 3-1 on Feb. 11 at Bentley and 2-1 in overtime Feb. 12 in Fort Saskatchewan to win the title.

The Generals defeated Sylvan Lake to advance to the finals the Chiefs beat the Stony Plain Eagles to advance.

The Generals are setting their sights on winning the Alberta Provincial Senior AAA title when they meet the Eagles in a best of seven first-round series starting Feb. 18 in Bentley.

They also want to return to the Allan Cup Championship being played in Kenora, Ont. April 11 to 16. The Bentley team was the Allan Cup champion in 2009 and the runners-up in 2010 and 2008.

The Generals finished at the top of the Chinook Hockey League. They finished the 20-game regular season with 19 wins and only one loss.

After 15 straight wins, the Generals’ only loss came at the hands of the third-place Admirals 3-2 on Jan. 21 at Sylvan Lake. The Admirals ended the regular season with a record of 10 wins, 8 losses, and 2 overtime losses.

Finishing in second place was the Chiefs with 13 wins, 6 losses, and a tie.

The Generals had four of the top 10 scorers at the end of regular league play. Travis Brigley led the scoring title with 16 goals and 21 assists, Curtis Austring of Bentley was third, Sean Robertson was sixth, and Joe Vandermeer was in ninth.

Brigley and Austring are number 1 and 2 in the overall top scorers as of Feb. 10, Robertson is eighth, Jason Lundmark 12th, Vandermeer 13th, and Donald Morrison 16th.

Bentley is best between the pipes too. As of Feb. 10 Bentley had the top two goalies in the league overall, with Scott Galenza posting a 1.63 GAA after 15 games to lead the pack, and Tim Haun was second with a 2.27 GAA after nine games.
