Charity game should fill rink and food bank

By CHARLES TWEED

Round 2 of the Fire and Ice Charity Challenge is set for Feb 27 at 2:30 p.m. in the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex.

The charity game features the Ponoka Fire Department (PFD) going head to head against the Lacombe Fire Department (LFD). Game 1, was won by Ponoka, a decisive 13-9 victory on Lacombe ice. But LFD has vowed to win the rematch.

“We expect them to come back with vengeance. They beat us twice last year so it was our turn to hang a lickin’ on them this year.

We have three RCMP playing with us this year because we had a few guys back out. I wouldn’t call them ringers but they are younger blood,” said PFD Capt. Kelsey Hycha. “It’s good, we always have fun with the guys from Lacombe and it’s all for a good cause so we enjoy it.”

The teams won’t charge admission to the game, but instead, ask for donations to the Ponoka Food Bank.

“All we ask for is food, or if people want to make a monetary donation, that works too. We just want to help the food bank and we know any donations are greatly appreciated,” said Hycha.

LFD has vowed to come out on top in the re-match game and Hycha is hoping the friendly rivalry fills the rink.

“Last year we had a really good turnout and it was close to being full. We were really happy with the crowd that came out and the donations that were given. This year we’re hoping that it being on a Sunday afternoon, we’ll get even more out and more kids too.”

You can cheer on the PFD, as they try to even the series at two a piece, and know your donation is going to help someone who needs it in the community.
