Hobbema captures gold in Leduc

Submitted

The Ermineskin Grade 7 and 8 junior girls basketball team captured gold on Thursday, Mar. 12 in Leduc after going undefeated during the regular season of the LDAA league.

We started this trek three years ago when the girls entered Grade 6. Over the last three years we have had girls come and go but were able to keep several core players.

2007 - First year we won two games, one of these games was by default.

2008 - The next year the league split into two divisions (north and south). We lost one game and were ranked number one in the south division but we were upset in the first round of playoffs.

2009 - In the third year we were determined to be successful. Throughout the three years the girls have dedicated their time and committed themselves to practice and hard work. They sacrificed social times with friends, weekends and personal functions so they could play basketball.

This team has been a great inspiration for their peers by displaying excellent work ethic and discipline at practice and games. The girls have even asked for extra practice time on Friday’s after school. One of the highlights of the 2009 season which we gained a huge confidence boost – we defeated a Grade 9 team in tournament play in Rocky 33-32. We had been behind by 10 points the whole game and with 30 seconds left we were one point away. Rocky had possession on the in bounds behind their basket. We stole the ball and scored as time ran out. The girls were elated and our confidence grew from there.

The junior girls are the first in Ermineskin School history to win a public school basketball tournament and first female team to win a public school league championship banner for our school.

We would like to thank parents, administration, staff and students for their continued support over the years.
