With provincial health restrictions now permitting outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people, the hockey nets have been set up on the Outdoor Rink (ODR) at the Ponoka Arena Complex to allow citizens to play shinny (drop-in hockey).
A maximum of 10 people is allowed on the ice at one time. Ice users are required to follow all provincial health orders, including physically distancing from those outside of their household. Ice users are also encouraged to wear a mask.
The ODR is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The change room at the northeast corner of the Arena remains closed to public use until further notice.
Both public skating and hockey are permitted at the ODR. Skaters and hockey players are asked to limit their time on the ice to allow others who may be waiting for the opportunity to skate as well.
Public skating
Public skating is also available at the Lions Centennial Park skating trail and the Downtown Skating Plaza at 48 Ave. and 51 St. in Ponoka. COVID-19 measures at the Downtown Skating Plaza include a maximum of 10 people permitted on the ice at one time, and there is only one entrance and one exit at the ice surface.
Skaters at all outdoor skating facilities in Ponoka are required to keep a two-metre distance from those outside their household and are encouraged to wear a mask. At the Centennial Park skating trail, if keeping a two-metre distance is not possible, skaters are asked to wait until the ice surface becomes less crowded before skating.
