The Ponoka Composite High school Junior Broncs girl’s volleyball team has done it again.

In their final game of the regular season, the team headed to their home court to take on Red Deer’s Hunting Hills Lightening at 6 p.m. on Nov. 5, ultimately emerging victorious finishing with a flawless season record of 8-0.

In volleyball, three sets must be won in order for the game to end an each set goes to 25. The score often goes higher than 25 because the set can only be won by a two-point lead. This was the only game the Broncs played this season that went to five sets.

During the intense match, the Lightening took the initial lead winning the first set by ten points making the score 25-15. The Broncs came back strong and won the second set by 7 with a score of 25-18, but the victory was short lived as the Lightening took the third set by two points winning it 26-24.

The Broncs won the fourth set 25-20 before it was then time for the set that mattered most and after an hour of impressive performance from both sides and with crowd, coach and player anticipation heightened to the max, the Broncs took charge of the back and forth battle in the fifth and final set winning 15-7 and therefore winning the game.

“It has just been an amazing season,” said coach and former University Volleyball player Stephanie Wyne. “They are a great group of fun girls who are very eager to learn. Their hard work has taken their game to such a higher level and their success has been a huge excitement for the school,” she said.

Next weekend the girls will represent their school when they head to Rocky Mountain House for zone playoffs, the final tournament of the season.

It is a round robin tournament meaning all entrants play each other at least once. When it is finished, medals are given out and this year’s season will come to end.

The girls will head into this tournament seated first, and if past tournaments have any relevance in relation to future performance, the Broncs are in good shape as they head into this one.

Throughout this season they have participated in four tournaments. In the Bownes invitational tournament in Calgary they received first place and in the Queens Classic Senior Tournament in Ponoka they placed second. In the Delburne invitational senior Tournament in Delburne they came in fourth and at the Ardossan Halloween Havoc in Ardossan they came in third place. They were first in their pool in all tournaments except Delburne, but aren’t taking anything for granted. They will hit the gym hard this week to practice and perfect plays and techniques just as they have been all year.

Good luck girls!
