Lacoka Lacrosse hosts provincial championships

Arenas in Ponoka and Lacombe will be filled this weekend with young lacrosse players in search of a provincial championship banner to hang in their home arena.

The top 23 teams representing the different lacrosse leagues from across Alberta will begin play on Friday morning, July 13 at 9 a.m. and play in a round robin format with the medal games to determine the provincial champions set to go on Sunday, July 15.

In the Novice Division, the Lacoka LV Energy host team will be joined by teams representing the Central Alberta Lacrosse League (CALL ) Red Deer Chiefs #3, Calgary District Lacrosse Association (CDLA) Rocky View #3, Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council (GELC) and the Wainwright Wolfpack representing the Wheatland Lacrosse League.

The Peewee Division will also have the host Strand Media Lacoka team, coming off their CALL league championship win, joined by the first-place teams from the CDLA,(Knights #1), GELC (Parkland Posse), the Lakeland Heat from Wheatland Lacrosse and the team from Brooks representing the Southern Alberta Lacrosse Association (SALA). The Red Deer Chiefs who were the silver medalists from CALL will round out the six teams in this division.

The Bantam Division has six teams as well. Representing CALL will be the Olds Stingers, CDLA will be represented by the Sabrecats #2, GELC (TBD), and the Vermillion Roar will represent Wheatland. Grand Prairie and the host Lacoka C-Key Trucking team will round out the Bantam Division.

The Midget Division promises to be a competitive division with the best teams from CALL (Kneehill Bulldogs), CDLA (High River Heat), GELC (Westlock Rock), SALA (Lethbridge Barracudas) and the Wheatland league champion Vermillion Roar joining the host Lacoka Strand Media team.

In all, close to 425 athletes will take part in the B provincial competition and everyone is invited to come out and check out the super lacrosse action.
