Ladies rock the house in annual bonspiel

By CHARLES TWEED

The question everyone was trying to answer this weekend was, could you hack it?

The ladies curling club was hogging the ice time on Friday and Saturday as they held their annual bonspiel.

Twelve teams participated in the bonspiel, which focused less on serious competition and more about throwing rocks at houses. The action is also the one chance anybody can feel comfortable asking whose turn it is to sweep around the house?

All puns aside, organizer Kelly Sperber said the bonspiel was once again a huge success — with a few interesting rules.

“If you hog the rock, you have to put a loonie and your name in the hog bucket and wear the silly hat, at the end we’ll draw to see who wins the money – it’s lots of fun,” said Sperber.

The spiel consisted of 10 teams from Ponoka and one from both Rimbey and Lacombe. Marie Janssens put her name down to spare and got a call on Thursday to join a team.

“It’s really nice to get to meet all of the girls who curl in the league here. Everyone seems to be in good spirits and having a lot of fun.”

Janssens’ team won their final game in an extra end, resulting in a $60 cash prize. When questioned whether the funds might go toward extending the fun at the banquet, she could only say, with a wry smile, “no comment.”

The bonspiel sweeps up the season, completing the ladies league for 2010-11; but the club is now encouraging anyone who wants to play to hurry and sign up for the fun league beginning in February. You can register as an individual or couple by contacting Kristen at 783-2370.
