Calumet Curling Rink has found two gentlemen who were orginal sponsors on the club’s sponsor board from when the rink was built in 1953.

“We have only recently brought up the discussion of the old board displaying our original sponsors and wondered if there were any of them around still,” said Byron Spelrem.

The two gentlemen are from Bashaw and recently came out for a visit.

Ed Schneider (92) - E. Snyder Trucking (the name was misspelled) and Mac Raemer (94) - Raemer Hardware are two of the original sponsors.

The rink was built for $1,905 with the help of 45 members who donated $25 each.

“They told a story of one of the trips with the lumber being hauled from Rocky Mountain House,” said Spelrum.

“Due to improper loading, the truck lost control coming down Jenkins Hill and the load had to be reloaded before continuing the rest of the way to the rink.

“They reminisced, looked through old photographs and noticed the many changes from the old days from 1954 when the first stone was thrown.”

Spelrem says the pair are looking forward to coming back March 7 for the Mixed Doubles Finals to see some curling in action.

Spelrem says, as far as anyone has found out, Snyder and Raemer are the last living sponsors.

“If there are any other original sponsors around, we would love to have them out and hear their stories as well.”
