Mixed spiel provides spills

The Ponoka Curling Club held its annual mixed bonspiel Feb. 11 to 13.

Registration was down slightly to 22 teams, but it didn’t stop the teams from having a blast both on and off the ice.

“A big part of a mixed bonspiel is it’s a social spiel. We’ve had the hog hat, toonie brooms, and draws to have fun and raise some money for the club. Everybody gets along well, it’s been competitive at times but once the curlers are off the ice it’s social,” said spiel organizer Ron MacMillan, whose team was bounced out in the quarter-final.

The winning team made the bonspiel a family affair.

Roger Lindstrand, who still calls Ponoka home even though he now lives in Red Deer, skipped the winning squad with his daughters Jillian and Breanna at third and lead, Dave Weinkauf at second and Mike Axelsen as the fifth.

“We had a great weekend, we curled well and had some tough games but ended up on top. It’s my first win in the mixed bonspiel and we’re happy. It was well organized, lots of fun and a great weekend all around,” said Lindstrand.

Lindstrand beat the Ponoka foursome of Dave Williams, Miriam Farrington, Gord Hickey and Jo Harbin. Harbin will represent Ponoka and zone 4 at the upcoming 55 plus Alberta Winter Games.
