National Pinto horse show comes to Ponoka

Pinto horse show at the Calnash Ag Event Centre brings equine discipline skill sets

Pinto horse lovers had a busy weekend at the Calnash Ag Event Centre.

A special, final national show gave members of the Canadian Pinto Horse Association (CPHA) a chance to showcase their riding skills in the disciplines such as Western and English riding.

Roxane Wenstrom is one of the directors of the association and she says they have a positive learning environment for kids or adults who want to get into horse riding disciplines without the pressure of the bigger breed shows.

The weekend was a busy one for the association and is an ideal spot for those, “who want to get out and show but a lot of us are beginners,” says Wenstrom.

For those who don’t know, a Pinto horse is one with large patches of white and other colours. They can be any type of breed, says Wenstrom.

“It is any breed of horse that is coloured. We have ponies, we have draft, we have light horses. We have all sorts,” she added.

There were about 60 entries over the weekend.

Started in 1963, the CPHA has always had a focus on training and preserving the pinto horse.

“It’s a great starting point for a lot of people,” said Wenstrom.

The event was busy enough there were two judges, one from the United States and one from Canada.
