Peewee Locos undeafeated in season

The biggest challenge the Lacoka (Ponoka and Lacombe) peewee Locos lacrosse team may face this season is overconfidence.

The biggest challenge the Lacoka peewee Locos lacrosse team may face this season is not being over confident in their games.

One reason that could be an issue has to do with the team being undefeated so far. For coaches the goal is to keep learning and growing in the game. Assistant coach Wayne Wood wants to see all players work together as a team.

After the Locos defeated the Red Deer Chiefs 9-3 on May 13, Wood explained it’s about playing at a high standard throughout the game. “We didn’t play at the caliber that we could play.”

“The biggest challenge will be coming together as a team,” Wood added.

He would prefer to see all players active and involved rather than a few players putting in the work.

Against the Chiefs the Locos seemed to have the game in the bag early on with five goals in the first period but in the third period the team seemed to lay off on the pressure, which created some stagnation in play action. There was only one goal in the second period but the team still had a large margin over Red Deer.

Eventually the Locos showed some strength securing two goals late in the third bringing it to a 9-3 win.

The wins appear to be mostly large margins. The next day the Locos took on Innisfail in Ponoka and the home team won a whopping 14-1 game. There’s only one team where the Locos will be challenged, suggested Wood, and that’s one of the two Olds teams. That game will be in a few weeks.

Wood suggests being overconfident will hurt the team’s chances when a tough game comes against them. Despite those challenges he praised the players for an overall positive attitude.

“They’re good kids and when they play to their potential, I don’t think there’s anybody that can touch them,” said Wood.
