Ponoka curler Andrew Jones was recognized as an All Star curler with the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).

The recognition came at the ACAC banquet Feb. 16 where Jones was awarded as All Star Second curler to the 2017-18 ACAC Men’s Curling All-Conference team.

He plays for Red Deer College (RDC) and is the only curler from the school who was recognized with ACAC.

“It’s a huge honour to be picked by my fellow colleagues,” said Jones.

A press release from RDC points out that Andrew is a key member of the Red Deer College curling program.

“The second-year student-athlete helped lead his team to a combined 8-2 record at the fall and winter regionals, which placed the RDC Kings in a tie for first place with the Concordia University Thunder,” states the release.

Being in a tie spot pitted the Kings against the Thunder this past weekend. It was a game that could have gone either way, said Jones of the 6-5 loss.

As for his work ethic, his coach is pleased with Jones’ dedication.

“Andrew has worked very hard on his curling game and his fitness, which has resulted in steady improvement throughout the year. He was one of the top seconds at both the fall and winter regionals,” says Brad Hamilton, head coach of RDC curling.

Jones is well known in Ponoka as a coach for the men’s high school team. For him, it’s about being able to give back to the sport and see it continue.

Those at RDC recognize that community involvement, which goes further into other areas at the school, states the release.

“Andrew is reflective of the type of student-athlete that we strive to have at Red Deer College,” says Diane St-Denis, RDC athletic director. “Not only is he an accomplished curler, but he is a strong student who is involved heavily in the community coaching youth and the Special Olympics.”

Something Jones is pleased with is RDC’s program, which has seen its mens, womens and mixed teams make it three years in a row to provincials. And coming up soon will be nationals being hosted in Alberta with the men’s and women’s team competing.
