Young soccer athletes from three provinces will be able to showcase their skills on Ponoka’s pitches.

This weekend the Crazy 8 Sports College Showcase will bring soccer athletes together to showcase their talents in front of college/university scouts and coaches. The event is hosted by Lonny Behm, owner of Crazy 8 Sports. He is also the vice-president and director of player/coach development for Ponoka Soccer.

This is the second year for the showcase event. Behm’s experience as a coach within Central Alberta Soccer Association led him to create the showcase as an opportunity for rural kids who may not have thought they were ‘good enough’ to play on college teams.

Lucas Heights fields will play host to the event, with participating male and female athletes from three provinces as well as representatives of many Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference schools, American colleges and one English Club.

Soccer fans welcome

Registration is May 26 with training from 4 to 7 p.m. Matches run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday followed by a keeper training session facilitated by King’s University College (Edmonton). Sunday features an Awards presentation at noon, followed by the University of Alberta Junior Pandas playing each of the ladies’ teams from the showcase.

This showcase event provides players born from 1998 to 2002 the chance to play in front of college scouts, make connections that could lead to post-secondary scholarships, and get specific feedback from those Scouts. The general public is welcome to attend and watch some great soccer in their own back yards!
