Queens suffer heartbreaking defeat in zone playdowns

The St. Augustine School girls volleyball team has fallen one win — a mere two points — shy of a trip to the provincial 1A volleyball championships.

When the Queens hosted the Central West Alberta Junior High Athletic Association zone playdowns Nov. 21, it appeared they would reach their goal as the day’s games progressed.

St. Augustine went unbeaten through the round robin, defeating Rimbey, River Glen and Pioneer Middle School.

The St. Augustine girls were rolling along — until they came up against St. Thomas Aquinas (STA) from Provost in the championship final.

The best of three match was a thriller — with STA taking the first set 25-22, and the Queens bouncing back to take the second set 25-17. That set up a winner take all third game — which Provost won a the slim margin of 15-13.

St. Augustine settled for silver medals, while STA will now represent the Central West Zone at the 1A provincial championships in Bassano Nov. 26 and 27. For the Provost team, it will be their fourth trip to provincials in the last five years.

“It was an excellent season for us,” said head coach Darren Josephison. “We finished with an 89-27 record, three tournament wins, and a second-straight Central West League Championship.”
