Despite fears that the school may not have a junior varsity (JV) girls’ team this season, the St. Augustine team placed third at its first tournament of the year, held Sept. 29 at the school.

In the last two weeks, the school had five girls, all members of the JV team, transfer to other schools. Coach Nicole York brought up some Grade 9 volleyball players to fill the spots. “We didn’t even know of we’d have a team,” she said.

York feels all the girls played well and their final game for bronze was an easy match. “It wasn’t that close. We didn’t have to go to three sets; we won the match in two,” she added.

With weekly training sessions, York says the highlight of the tournament was knowing the girls had the skills and could have been first, as they split a set in their game against the HJ Cody Lakers.

The biggest area she could pinpoint for the girls to work on, especially the younger girls who have not had the opportunity to play at that level before, is communication. “They’re so quiet out there.”

However, during their games the girls battled for the points, handling some tough serves and winning a number of fierce rallies.
