Stamps drop third straight, still winless on the road

By Dale Cory

After a hot start that saw Ponoka win three of its first five games, the Stampeders have cooled down, and have now gone successive weekends without earning a Heritage Junior Hockey League victory.

Ponoka fell 6-4 to the Mountainview Colts Saturday in Didsbury.

A three-goal first period from the home team did in the Stamps, who have yet to win in three road games.

Ponoka actually got off to a quick start, with Jordan Duthie scoring his first of the season just 17 seconds into the contest. Kenton Siegle and Cody Hagg drew assists.

It would be the lone bright spot for the Stamps in the opening period. Dilan Kolb tied the game at 2:19, Taylor Olsen gave the Colts a lead they would not relinquish with a power play goal at 8:15, and added another goal with Mountainview holding a man advantage to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission.

Duthie’s second of the game 64 seconds into the second period pulled Ponoka to within a goal, but Curtis Smith and Cody Krebs scored 42 seconds apart to give the Colts a 5-2 lead.

Jared Kambeitz, with his second of the season, got Ponoka to within two at 12:03, but Jason Edwards made it a 6-3 game before the period was over.

Scott Rarick’s second of the season 7:15 into the third period pulled the Stamps to within two goals — but it was as close as the visitors would get.

The loss dropped Ponoka’s record to 3-5 on the season.

Around the league… Two teams are still unbeaten heading into the second month of the season. Airdrie improved its record to 9-0 over the weekend to lead the Central Division, while division-mate Cochrane sits with seven-straight wins.

Coaldale leads the South Division with a 6-2-1-1 record and 14 points.

In the North Division, Red Deer has a 6-1-1 record for 13 points, two better than Blackfalds. The Wranglers are 5-1-1. Stettler sits in third place with four wins in nine games, two better than Ponoka, while Rimbey is the lone remaining winless team. The Rock has yet to win in seven tries.

Next up… the Stamps are in for a tough week against the top two teams in their division.

After playing in Blackfalds Nov. 2, the Stamps entertain Red Deer Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 7:45 p.m. at the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex.
