The real challenge for the midget team this season will be provincials

With an incredibly strong 2-0 record in the lacrosse season, the midget Locos will need to look for stronger competition to remain competitive.

The Locos played in Ponoka against the Innisfail Phantoms April 21. Not only did the Locos win, they toppled the Phantoms 17-0. The team is quite strong with all players from last season back again representing Lacoka, explained coach Gord Kirbyson.

“I’ve coached these boys since novice,” he explained.

This was the first game against Innisfail this season and Kirbyson said he scoped out the team’s strategies a week prior. He knew it was going to be a good game for the Locos and expects much of the season to go this route.

“We’re going to have a strong team all season. The biggest challenge is when we go to provincials, when we actually do find that competition, that’s when it’s going to hurt us,” said Kirbyson. “Because we’re not going to know how to handle it.”

He knows without some tough competition the Locos will come to the main provincials challenge unprepared, so Kirbyson has some exhibition games with A teams organized.

The midget Locos are considered a B team because of the population area around Ponoka and Lacombe, which is what started the Lacoka lacrosse program.

The Locos played Blackfalds first in regular season and the outcome was quite similar to the one against Innisfail.

Kirbyson feels the strong performance is a testament to the training strategy that Lacoka implements across all teams. “We try and do the same thing for all the boys all the way up.”

“A different coach isn’t teaching something different,” Kirbyson added.

While the season is still early, Kirbyson looks forward to getting tougher games in for the team.
