One thing Ponoka knows how to do well is a New Year’s Eve bull riding event.
The ABBI (American Bucking Bull Inc.) Classic Finals brought over 1,200 attendees to Ponoka, explained organizer Nansen Vold.
Hosted by the Wayne Vold Rodeo Company, “…30 riders were matched up against 30 young, three-year old bulls that were also competing for top bull score in a ABBI Canada Finals derby event,” said Nansen.
Winning the long round was Tim Lipsett with a score of 85.50 on Foley Bucking Bulls’ Firebeatz.
This event also gave young three- and four-year-old bucking bulls a chance to showcase their bucking abilities; Mainline Bucking Bulls’ three-year-old Power Dozer won the long round and a cheque of over $2,600, said Vold.
“With 11 rides in the long round there was 11 top four-year-old bulls also competing for the top ABBI Classic Champion Spot in the short round,” he added.
It was a good round with Shay Marks scoring 88 on Foley Bucking Bulls’ Savage. For second place Logan Biever scored 87.5 and third was Jake Gardner with 87.
“But both Logan and Jake tied for the win with a total of 172 points on two bulls,” said Vold.
“Top bull honours went to 2 Bit Bucking Bulls’ four-year-old super star Happy Camper with the event win and the year-end champion,” said Vold.
That bull took home close to $4,000 in prize money.
