Arena

The Ponoka arena complex is a community hub for sports, trade shows and markets — it’s so much more than hockey.

Most people don’t realize it, but under the stands of the arena are two racquetball courts.

One of the courts is marked to allow for a solid game of squash and both are outfitted with hooks for nets to allow teams to play wallyball, a sport that is similar to volleyball and uses the walls as part of the play.

The arena boasts two ice surfaces and updated locker rooms for visiting teams and is home to the Junior B Stampeders hockey team.

If curling is more your speed, the town also offers a six-sheet curling rink to keep folks busy.

Recent improvements to the arena include replacement of damaged puck board and kick plates on the large and small ice, repairs and painting of the stands in the large ice area, new clear protective coverings on the advertising boards at both ice surfaces and painting throughout the facility.

Ponoka Aquaplex

Families make good use of the 25-metre salt-water swimming pool at the Ponoka Aquaplex, which is complete with kiddy pool, sauna and hot tub.

There is also a 12-foot deep tank with diving board, climbing wall and a rope swing. FCSS sponsors free family night swims often throughout the year.

Recent maintenance and facility improvements at the Ponoka Aquaplex include a refurbished and resurfaced hot tub, a new five-rung ladder in the deep tank, electrical upgrades in the mechanical rooms, painting and new signage.

Splash park

During the hot summer days, cooling off at the splash park in the heart of Ponoka and Centennial Park along Highway 2A is great fun for the little ones. Adults can watch close by under the shade of the gazebos and enjoy a family picnic when the kids get hungry.

Other outdoor recreation facilities include several public playgrounds, Hamilton’s Skate Park, and the outdoor fitness park, located across from the Scout Hall on 46A St. Close.

Golf courses

Ponoka boasts two amazing golf courses.

Wolf Creek Golf Resort was the first to get off the tee, with the first groups hitting the Links course on May 2 and the Ponoka Golf Club began booking tee times as of May 8.

The Ponoka Golf Club is found on the eastern side of town nestled along the Battle River and has 18 holes for golf lovers. The club has been home to several important Alberta Golf amateur challenges.

The Wolf Creek Golf Resort is 10 minutes south of Ponoka on Highway 2A and houses two 18-hole courses. It mirrors old Scottish golf courses and sits on an ancient lake bed that provides challenging hills for golfers.
