The sixth annual Jace Harty Memorial Bull Riding event saw some cowboys get bucked off their bulls even before they got out of their chutes and others have some of their best rides ever to make the event a great success.

Gina Flewelling tied her goat in 8.1 seconds during the Alberta High School Rodeo Finals, which were held June 13 to 15 at the Ponoka Stampede Grounds. Flewelling will be heading to Farmington, New Mexico to compete in the high school rodeo national finals July 20 to 26.

The athletes who wear the Bronc on their jersey representing Ponoka Composite High School all do so with pride. They have worked hard all year long and were awarded during their Athletic Banquet on June 12.

The Ponoka girl’s peewee teams hosted an invitational softball tournament on June 14. Above a player from Ponoka 2 team took a swing and a foul ball while facing Sylvan Lake and losing a close battle. The Ponoka 2 team lost in the finals to the Ponoka 1 team.

Ladies open results

The Ponoka Ladies Open was held on June 7 at the Ponoka Community Golf Course with just under 100 ladies hitting the tees for 18 holes of golf. Ladies from Edmonton to Lacombe and further came to brave the weather and the course for a fun day on the links.

The future stars of rodeo were on display during the Alberta High School rodeo finals on June 13 to 15 at the Ponoka Stampede Grounds. There were 166 cowboys and cowgirls from all over Alberta competing to be crowned the best in the province and a chance at the National Finals.

he Wolf Creek Junior High School championship was held at Ponoka Composite High School on June 5 and some local schools did very well. Diamond Willow Middle School and PCHS combined for the ‘3J’ category and competed against Lacombe Junior High school and placed second.

High school rodeo finals set for Ponoka

Ponoka and area will be represented by 10 cowboys and cowgirls at the Alberta High School Rodeo finals on June 13, 14 and 15 at the Ponoka Stampede Grounds. The top five competitors at the finals will head to the National High School Rodeo Finals in Farmington, New Mexico on July 20 to 26. If they finish fifth to tenth they qualify for the Silver State Finals in Fallon, Nevada on June 30 to July 5.
